Our History




The Church of St. Mary the Virgin owes its origins to Joseph Paul, a freed black slave who came with the Loyalists from North Carolina in 1794 and built a chapel at the corner of Heathfield and Augusta Streets.

We are a part of the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. As such, we hold to the creeds of the ancient church as handed down to us through the apostles and early church fathers.
